Bicycle Accident Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I was involved in a bicycle accident?
- Stay Calm
- Seek Proper Medical Attention Immediately. Most people who are injured in a bicycle accident are injured to some degree because the accident usually involves being struck by a car or truck. While many people will naturally tend to minimize any pain or soreness that they may be experiencing at the accident scene (e.g., “I’m a little sore but I think I’ll be ok”), even serious injuries may not be immediately evident. Therefore, seeking prompt medical attention is always a good idea.
- Call the Police Department . If the accident involves property damage or personal injury, call the police immediately, wait until they show up, and make a report.
- Exchange Information . This would include the following information:
- Driver’s name, address, date of birth, telephone number, driver’s license number, insurance company name and policy number.
- Vehicle's make, year, model and license plate number.
- The name, address, telephone number, and insurance companies of the person who owns the vehicle.
- Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of any passengers.
- Names, addresses and telephone numbers of witnesses to the accident.
- Ask them to stay to talk to the police. Ask them to explain to you what they saw and if possible write down what they saw.
- Identify people at the accident scene, even if they will not give you their contact info. If a witness leaves the scene, make a note of his or her vehicle's license plate number. Police can obtain the owner's name and address with this information.
- Note details regarding the accident, its location, weather conditions, and visibility.
- Take photos if possible of where vehicles are positioned, even if only with a cell phone camera.
- Obtain the names and badge numbers of all police officers at the scene.
- Ask the investigating officer how to obtain a copy of the police report.
- Do Not Sign Any Document unless it is for the police or your insurance agent.
